3. History of Phuoc My Ward

a) Natural characteristics

Geographical location - topography: Phuoc My -one of 7 wards in Son Tra district, Da Nang city-is located at 16°4′16″ north latitude, 108°14′28″ east longitude, about 1.5 km east of the city center; the east borders East sea; The West borders An Hai Dong and An Hai Bac wards; The South borders My An ward (Ngu Hanh Son district); The North borders with Man Thai ward. The total natural area of Phuoc My ward is 204 ha. The whole ward currently has 6 residential areas: Phuoc Truong, My Thanh, My An, My Quang, My Hiep and My Tan.

Climate and hydrology: Phuoc My's climate is characterized by monsoon climate in the central coastal region. The weather is divided into two distinct seasons: the dry season from February to August of the year and the rainy season from September to February of the following calendar year; The average annual rainfall is over 2,000 mm, mainly in the rainy season. During the rainy season, there is usually a northeast monsoon, while in the dry season, there is a southwesterly wind. The average temperature in the year is 280C, the average humidity is 83%. In the dry season, thanks to the influence of the East Sea, the climate is mild and favorable for swimming and relaxing.

Natural resources: The sea is considered a strength in socio-economic development of Phuoc My ward. Beautiful My Khe beach, which is well-known both domestic and abroad, has long drawn a sizable number of tourists to unwind and go swimming, especially during the sunny months. By utilizing the sea, the residents of Phuoc My established offshore fishing and aquaculture fleets and expanded various forms of tourism and services.

Road traffic: Before the liberation of the homeland (3.1975), Phuoc My area had only a few roads paved with stones; the rest are mostly red dirt roads, difficult to travel. Up to now, Phuoc My has a full transportation infrastructure system that is present in every residential area of the ward and serves as a vital traffic junction between the city center and significant cultural, tourist, and service sites of the surrounding communities.

b) Administrative geography and population characteristics

Administrative geography: The land belonging to Phuoc My formerly belonged to Lu Dung district, Nhat Nam district under the Han dynasty, and later belonged to Champa. In 1306, the King of Champa, Che Man, offered two continents, O and Ly, including the land from the south of Quang Tri province to the north of present-day Quang Nam province, to the Tran dynasty as a wedding bride for Princess Huyen Tran.

Population characteristics: Phuoc My ward was formed on the basis of two villages, My Khe and Phuoc Truong.

c) Economic characteristics

The people of My Khe and Phuoc Truong have a tradition of diligence, with two main occupations: seafaring and farming. When the sea is rough, they work on the farm. When farming is idle, they work in the sea, go to the mountains... The people of My Khe and Phuoc Truong used to say "the foot of the sea", "the foot of the dune", which means that leaving the oars to leave the sea is about hand hoe and hand with bucket going to dune for farm.

Since the country's renovation period in 1986 up to now, especially since Da Nang city was directly under the Central Government (1997), Phuoc My ward from a poor coastal locality, people specialize in living by inshore fishing, farming and self-employment are now starting to develop strongly.
